The BTone Index (BTI) is something I came up with to give players a clearer idea of how a pickup is likely to sound based on its real electrical specs — not just marketing names or buzzwords.

It looks at four key factors: inductance (Lp), Q factor, capacitance (Cp), and resonant resistance (Rp) — which isn’t the same as the DC resistance you measure with a multimeter. Together, these shape how a pickup behaves and how it feels under your fingers.

The BTI combines those specs into a single number that helps describe the pickup’s tonal personality. Lower BTI values usually mean a brighter, more open sound, while higher numbers tend to be warmer, thicker, and more compressed.

Of course, tone is still influenced by a lot of other things — your guitar, amp, cables, pots, speakers, and most importantly, how you play. The BTI isn’t a perfect prediction, but it’s a reliable reference point for understanding and comparing pickups on equal ground.

Think of it like a tone compass — it won’t play the notes for you, but it’ll definitely help you find your direction.
