  • Winding Back the Years: The Pickup Story of JBR

Before the international tours, album releases, and JUNO nominations, James Buddy Rogers — JBR — was already deep into the details of tone. Long before boutique pickup brands filled online carts, JBR was in his garage, surrounded by spools of wire and stacks of magnets, quietly shaping the sound that would become his signature.

He didn’t start winding pickups to sell them. He started because he wasn’t hearing what he wanted. Like so many tone-chasers, JBR was in search of that perfect balance — clarity, warmth, grit, and dynamic response — the kind of tone that feels alive under your fingers. In the early to mid-'90s, long before it became fashionable, he taught himself the art of winding pickups, mostly through trial, error, and a deep obsession with sound.

Some of those early pickups still live in guitars he plays today. Others were handed off to fellow players, swapped into stage-worn Strats and road-weary Teles, passed along not as product, but as trust. If you played any of JBR’s guitars, there’s a chance you played through one of his windings — even if you didn’t know it.

As his music career expanded across North America and parts of Europe, so did his understanding of what tone meant on stage, in the studio, and under the hands of real musicians. He didn’t build pickups in batches. He built them to solve problems. Too brittle? He’d fix that. Too muddy? He’d fix that too. Winding pickups wasn’t a side hustle. It was a craft — part science, part feel, and all ears.

While most of his work stayed behind the scenes, a few commercial batches went out to select players and friends in the know. If you got one, it wasn’t from a catalog — it was from the bench of a guy who knew what it meant to stand in front of a crowd and need your guitar to speak.

And now, with decades of touring, recording, and tone-testing behind him, JBR is bringing that experience forward. Not just as a musician, but as a builder. The BTone brand isn't a new idea — it's the natural evolution of 30+ years of winding, refining, and listening.

These aren’t pickups built by a brand chasing hype. They’re built by a player who’s been chasing tone since 1986. Who still believes that the smallest changes make the biggest difference. And who knows what it’s like when your sound is the only thing between you and a crowd of strangers.

This isn’t a relaunch. It’s a rewind.

And the tone? Still personal. Still powerful. Still pure.
